AI for Good opens a new challenge: Cropland mapping with satellite imagery

04.08.2022

The AI for Good GeoAI Challenge aims to provide a platform for collaboratively addressing real-world geospatial problems by applying artificial intelligence to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Consistent data on global cropland extent is essential for tracking progress towards sustainable food production, especially for SDG 2 "zero hunger".

To achieve this goal, AI for Good GeoAI challenge collaborated with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the UN Open GIS Initiative to accurately map cropland with satellite images and Google Earth with machine learning solutions. These will be tested in Sudan, Iran, Sri Lanka, and Mozambique.
